Speaker – Rebecca Winning, Communications Director, Jefferson County Public Library
Rebecca joined Jefferson County Public Library as manager of communications and public engagement in January 2010; in 2011 she was named communications director. She is responsible for internal and external communications, media and community relations, advocacy and strategic partnerships for the Library. Prior to joining JCPL, Rebecca held leadership positions in communications and investor relations for Quovadx, Inc.; MediaOne Group; U S West; Adolph Coors Company and other public companies. She has served on the board of directors of local chapters of the International Association of Business Communicators and the National Investor Relations Institute. She has received numerous national awards for her communications efforts, including a Gold Quill (highest available award) from the International Association of Business Communicators for her work in corporate media relations for Coors. Rebecca holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from DePauw University (1974), a Bachelor of Science degree in finance from Regis University and a Master of Arts degree in English from the University of Denver (1979). She has also completed 28 hours of graduate work in business and finance at the University of Denver.
5-minute Spotlight Speaker – Maya León-Meis
Maya León-Meis, is a native of Peru, who has lived in the U.S. for over 35 years. She is a Certified Nutritional Chef graduated from the Nutrition Therapy Institute in Denver. She has also studied at the Escoffier Culinary School in Boulder and EXPRO Culinary School in Peru. Now she owns Taste of Peru Cooking School and Fiesta Fusion food truck.
She was the creator and host of Los Secretos de Maya and Maya’s Secrets, a healthy cooking television show that aired in Colorado from 2006 to 2012 on Telemundo, and on PBS Channel 12. She has authored the cookbook entitled “Maya’s Secrets” and its Spanish version “Los Secretos de Maya”, which were published by the American Cancer Society. In 2013, her cookbook won “The Best Ethnic Cookbook” award in the USA, as well as the top award in the health & nutrition category and thus represented the USA in the international cookbook contest in Beijing, in 2014.
Maya received a B.A. degree in Language Teaching from Instituto Pedagógico in Peru, and with a Fulbrigh scholarship she received an M.A. degree in Applied Linguistics from the University of Colorado in Boulder. She is an ATA Certified Translator and has had a translation company since 1980.
